Too many students are not prepared to have success in college.  Learn how study skills can help your students to have succcess in their K12 schools.Springfield, PA –– Dr. Stephen Jones author of Seven Secrets of How to Study has embarked on a national campaign to inspire youth who dream of attending college.  His motivation is an out growth of his early days living in a low income neighborhood in Philadelphia, Pa.  He dreamed one day of going to college in spite of his surroundings. Dr Jones was determined to make a difference in the community where he once lived.  To that end, he spent 20 years helping low income students to succeed in college.  His work at Philadelphia University, Drexel University and Metropolitan Career Center Computer Technology Institute enabled 1000’s of students to receive their college degree.  During the fall of 2003, he left his job to help K12 students learn better study skills. Dr. Jones is reaching back to help students to obtain higher levels of success.  He is also creating a scholarship that he will offer to students who visit his website. His visits to schools have revealed the diverse learning environments that students are facing today.  During his visits, Dr. Jones has learned that the curriculum is so full of state and school district requirements that teachers are not discussing study skills.  Some students get discouraged and their motivation to stay in school is compromised. On any given day 50 percent of our nation’s 9th grade students are contemplating dropping out of school.   In fact in many inner city schools only 50% of the student’s who start the 9th grade do not earn a high school diploma.  A large percentage of these students lack the study habit skills to complete high school.  According to a report by the Stanford Institute For Higher Education titled “Betraying the College Dream” released on March 4, 2003, college bound students are being set up to fail.   For example, U.S. Department of Education researchers indicate that the level of mathematics proficiency in calculus increases graduation rate potential by 80 percent and most schools are not offering advanced subjects.  Over the next ten years 10 million young adults will pursue their college dreams with inadequate preparation.  Our country faces severe economic consequences if we cannot educate the future workforce. According to the Betraying the College Dream Report, some of the common misconceptions that students have about college are the start of their problems:

  • Adhering to high school graduation requirements will prepare me for college (Not true)
  • Getting in to college is the most difficult part. (Graduating is the most challenging part)
  • It’s important to take easier classes in high school and earn better grades (Challenging courses help students to prepare)
  • Studying in the senior year of high school is not important ( It’s very important)
